The city of Green Bay has announced the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) and high-visibility crosswalks at 48 locations, in collaboration with Green Bay Area Public Schools (GBAPS). This development was revealed in a press release dated February 17, 2025.
According to the city, the project utilized funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and revenue from the Green Bay Area Public School District’s November 2022 referendum. The RRFBs are intended to enhance pedestrian safety by reducing crashes by up to 47% and increasing motorist yielding rates to as high as 98%. The initiative focuses on creating safer crossings for pedestrians, especially near schools and high-traffic areas.
The Safe Walk & Bike Plan, developed jointly by the city and the school district, promotes safe and accessible walking and biking for residents of all abilities. The selection of RRFB locations considered factors such as proximity to schools, crash history, roadway conditions, and community feedback. The next phase will expand the project with additional enhanced crosswalks and speed feedback signs around school zones to further improve safety.
“The people of Green Bay want and deserve safe streets,” said Mayor Eric Genrich in the press release. “These enhanced crosswalks improve pedestrian safety and driver awareness, and I’m grateful to City staff, our Common Council, and GBAPS leadership for making this plan a reality.”
Genrich has been serving as mayor since 2019 after three terms representing the 90th Assembly District in the Wisconsin State Assembly. A native of Green Bay, he holds degrees from UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee. His previous experience includes roles in state and federal government as well as work as an IT librarian. Genrich’s office is located at Green Bay City Hall where he maintains weekly open office hours.
