The Door County Library System is building on a plan that seeks to combine reading and gardening as part of its expanded services.
The so-called Seed Library can now be found in every branch of the Door County Library System, Fox 11 reported. The program is in its fourth year of operation.
“It’s a place that is open to the community, and it makes a lot of sense to have something like this in a library,” Door County librarian Laura Kayacan told Fox 11.
The Seed Library consists of a card catalog cabinet that has been repurposed to contain a large variety of seed packets and keep them organized, Fox 11 reported.
“We purchased a core list of seeds and then also get donations from some of the seed companies, and we also have some people returning seeds that are repackaged,” Kayacan said. “It’s helpful to teach people how to grow their own food, and it’s helpful to get back to nature. I find gardening is very relaxing, but understanding where our food comes from is so important today.”
Door County residents are excited about the Seed Library, with one of its latest openings in Sturgeon Bay drawing in a small crowd of locals to peruse the seed collection, Fox 11 reported.
“We’re very excited to get seeds that have been donated from the locals, that grow in southern Door,” Forestville local Valerie Schupbach told Fox 11. “So we’re excited to make sure that we have a good crop this year.”
The library includes vegetable, flower and herb seeds, which are all free to librarygoers, Fox 11 reported.
“We have a small greenhouse, just like a little built greenhouse that we’re going to start up in the next month, and we’re hoping May,” Schupback said. “It might be a little early yet, in May, but it’s been kind of a goofy spring here, so we’re hoping it’s going to be a nice, warm, early spring.”
