Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers is clear on his stance in the ongoing debate about legalizing the sale of marijuana in the state.

WISN reported voters in Milwaukee, Dane and Eau Claire counties have all come out in overwhelming support of the plan to legalize, as well as residents in the cities of Kenosha, Racine, Appleton, Stevens Point and Superior.

“It’s about darn time we listen to the people and legalize and tax marijuana in Wisconsin, much like we already do with alcohol,” Evers recently posted on Twitter.

UW-LaCrosse political science professor Anthony Chergosky said he does believe the wholesale legalization of marijuana will happen in Wisconsin, because the “Republicans in the legislature simply do not support that,” according to WISN.

Chergosky added he can see a scenario where the legislature ultimately moves to vote to legalize marijuana exclusively for medical use, WISN reported.

“It would be one way for Republicans to try to find some common ground with the governor,” Evers said, according to WISN. “At some point in time, the will of the people will become the law of the land. We will have a budget that includes legalizing marijuana.”
