Kamari McGee is officially on UW-Madison’s radar after the freshmen recently entered the transfer portal and made it known he will not be returning to UW-Green Bay.

Wisconsin has formally extended McGee an offer after a freshmen season in which he averaged 11.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists over 21 starts with the Phoenix in the Horizon League, BadgersWire said this week. Over the last five games, he upped his production to 17.6 point on 50.7% shooting (34-for-67).

The Racine native and former Saint Catherine standout, who was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman team and was a three-time Freshmen of the Week honoree, will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

McGee insists everything about the move adds up as being in his best interest.

“I just had a lot of sit-downs with my family and my parents, the people close to me,” he told the Green Bay Press Gazette. “We felt like this was best for my future. I just feel like there were bigger things possible for me. Nothing against the coaching staff or my teammates. I’ve got the utmost respect for them.”

After entering his name in the portal, McGee reportedly heard from many as 10 different programs interested in his services. The 6-foot, 170 point guard has a reputation for being a tenacious on-ball defender who excels at getting into the paint.

So far this offseason, the Phoenix have lost several players to the transfer portal as head coach Will Ryan, hired in June 2020, still seeks to settle in after replacing Linc Darner.
