Rep. Tony Wied, a U.S. Congressman who won his seat in 2024 by defeating Kristin Lyerly with 57.3% of the vote, has used social media to criticize Senate Democrats regarding the ongoing government shutdown.

On October 9, 2025, Wied posted: “Shutdown Schumer is saying the quiet part out loud:

The Democrats are willing to sell out federal workers, service members, farmers, and small business owners if they think it’s good for them politically.

The shutdown is good for Schumer, but bad for the American people.”

Later that day, Wied continued his criticism of Democratic leadership with another post: “When @RepJeffries can’t even explain himself to the mainstream media, you know he has a problem.

Democrats own this shutdown because they’re trying to undo our work and give healthcare back to illegal aliens, and they can’t defend it anymore.”

On October 10, 2025, Wied reiterated his stance: “Senate Democrats have been holding our government hostage for 10 days now and it’s causing real consequences across the country.

It’s time for them to put the American people first and pass our clean CR so we can get back to work.”

Wied’s statements come amid a prolonged federal government shutdown that has led to political standoffs in Congress. His remarks reference Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as key figures in the current negotiations. The debate centers on funding legislation known as a continuing resolution (CR), which would temporarily fund government operations while broader budget talks continue.

Tony Wied’s victory over Kristin Lyerly in the 2024 general election secured his position as a congressional representative with notable support from his district.
