Rep. Tony Wied, who represents Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District, recently addressed constituents on social media about the importance of small businesses and local traditions, including sturgeon spearing. Wied was elected to Congress in 2024 after defeating Kristin Lyerly with 57.3% of the vote.

On May 4, 2026, Wied posted: “This week, we honor the contributions of all the incredible entrepreneurs across our country. Small businesses make up 99% of businesses in the U.S. and are truly the backbone of our economy. Be sure to support all the great small businesses we have here in #WI08.”

Two days later, on May 6, 2026, Wied drew attention to a legal challenge affecting a Wisconsin tradition. He wrote: “The Center for Biological Diversity is once again planning a lawsuit that could end sturgeon spearing in WI. This is exactly why I introduced the SPEAR Act. Sturgeon spearing is a longstanding tradition and we don’t need out of state groups pushing their radical agenda on us.” The post was accompanied by another tweet linking to additional information: https://t.co/XAUSOroFNa.

Sturgeon spearing has deep roots in Wisconsin culture and faces periodic scrutiny from environmental organizations concerned about wildlife conservation. The Center for Biological Diversity has previously engaged in legal action related to wildlife management practices across various states.

Wied’s recent statements come as he continues his first term in Congress following his victory over Kristin Lyerly in 2024 with a margin of 57.3% to 42.6%.
