The community of Valders is honoring and raising awareness for a local coach's fight against cancer.

September is Leukemia Awareness Month and local residents of the Valders community came together to recognize Valders High School junior varsity volleyball coach, Emily Schneider, who is currently battling cancer, WBAY News reported.

During a recent volleyball game, the whole crowd wore orange and "Emily Strong" shirts in honor of her. During the event, supporters also held a fundraiser to raise money to go toward the cost of Schneider's medical care.

"It’s really meaningful. I don’t even have words to explain it. I’m just very thankful," Schneider said in an interview with WBAY News.

A diagnosis in April of 2020 prevented Schneider from finishing her senior year of high school, but she is trying to stay active and involved through her coaching position.

Schneider is currently undergoing treatment for her condition and has already had two surgeries. She hopes that her medical procedures will help her be cancer free by August 2023.

"I do have a long road. I’m not worried so much. My team of doctors is great. I’m very faithful I will come out with a good outcome," Schneider told WBAY News.
