The Oconto High School girls basketball is turning heads as they have put together a stellar season to date.
The team remains undefeated with less than a month left in the season.
"I had high expectations for this group. I knew we had a good freshmen class coming in, and I could tell from the first practice. I could tell we had great team chemistry, and I knew we could go far together,” Lianna Baxter, senior forward, said in a television interview.
The Blue Devils team is 17-0 after their last victory, when they doubled up Sturgeon Bay, 78-35.
The record speaks for itself, but what makes it more astounding is that the team hasn’t won a conference title in more than a century. Nor have they competed in the state tournament.
That aside, coach Nick Thomson spoke well of the team’s chances for doing those things this year.
"I knew coming into this season it could be a good season, but like you say, you don't know with injuries, the COVID stuff," he told Fox11. "You don't know. Luckily, we've had a few small injuries but we've been able to make do and stay healthy.”
There are six regular-season games left in the season. The playoffs are set to start Feb. 22.
