UW-Green Bay student Mercedes Reyes has been named a 2024-2025 Newman Civic Fellow, making her the seventh recipient from the university. Reyes, motivated by the impact of gun violence and the need for bold action, expressed gratitude for her nomination and subsequent recognition.

“I am extremely grateful and honored to have been nominated and to now be named a 2024-2025 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow,” said Reyes. “I am dedicated to gun violence prevention, and this opportunity is so important to my growth as a social justice activist and to the work that needs to be done. I feel strongly supported by the UW-Green Bay faculty and staff – from the connections to the variety of opportunities to the encouragement given to me by them. Now representing UW-Green Bay as a Newman Civic Fellow, this will be something that I do not take lightly. I will make sure to utilize this opportunity to the fullest.”

The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes students committed to community engagement who seek solutions for societal challenges. Named after Campus Compact founder Frank Newman, it provides training and resources aimed at helping students develop strategies for social change.

Reyes’ dedication is evident through her participation in various initiatives such as the Civic Scholars Leadership Program, an internship with Everytown for Gun Safety, and founding the UW-Green Bay Students Demand Action organization. She is pursuing degrees in Political Science and Democracy and Justice Studies with an emphasis on Social Justice.

The fellowship offers a one-year experience including access to learning opportunities, networking events, attendance at a national conference in Chicago, IL, and mentoring from local community leaders. Fellows also join a national network of peers committed to community service.

In the coming months, Reyes will further develop her leadership skills while planning activities for UW-Green Bay Students Demand Action and preparing for her fellowship duties.
