The recent snowstorm squall brought white out conditions which caused dozens of vehicles to fall into two area lakes and had rescuers facing severe weather conditions to reach victims.
According to FOX 11 News, SUNK? Dive and Ice Service has been responding to an estimated 24 vehicles that either fell in the cracks of the ice or sank to the bottom of lakes Poygan and Winnebago. Officials are still figuring out how many vehicles actually went into the lakes.
Rescues were made challenging due to wind and snow brought about by the storm.
"Even the fire departments were having a hard time locating people in need of rescue even though their lights or flashers on their vehicles were on," Lt. Tim Eichman with the Winnebago County Sherriff's Office said, according to FOX 11 News.
Systems Director for Gold Cross Ambulance Nick Romenesko said that they responded to three rescue calls near Lake Winnebago.
"People were in ice shacks or ice shanties that physically could not find their way back to shore because visibility was so poor," Romenesko told FOX 11 News.
