Wisconsin State Rep. Jim Steineke has announced he will not be seeking reelection and plans to step down early from his seat in District 5.
“My time in the legislature has been incredibly rewarding, and it has been an honor to be trusted by the people of the 5th district to represent their voices in Madison, and I want to thank them for their support over the years,” Steineke said in a press release. “I want to further thank my colleagues both past and present for their friendship and their dedication to making Wisconsin a better place to live, work and raise a family. I’m proud to have served with them. Finally, to my staff over the years, you’re all amazing people that worked incredibly hard for me and the people of the state. Your service will never be forgotten.”
First elected to the Assembly in 2010, Steineke first announced back in January that he would not be running for reelection, adding he believed it was time to pass the torch. According to APNews.com, in 2013, Steineke was promoted to assistant majority leader and tabbed as majority leader two years later, a position he has held ever since.
At the time of his announcement, Steineke said he planned to serve the community and its people for as long as there was further action within the legislature, and now with there being no more scheduled legislative sessions before his term ends, he has decided to move into the private sector early.
NBC reports Steineke’s resignation from the state Assembly officially becomes effective at 5pm, July 27th, 2022. Along with his post as Assembly majority leader, Steineke also represented the Fifth Congressional District of Wisconsin, which is in the northeast section of the state.
The primary for the district will be on August 9.
