Veteran Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett has announced his NFL retirement after eight seasons with the team.
According to Yahoo Sports, despite having not played in the league since 2019 and announced in 2021 that he was not planning on suiting up again, Burnett’s news nevertheless drew a strong reaction from teammates.
“MoBetta_ 42congrats, brotha,” teammate David Bakhtiari posted on Twitter.
Burnett, who as a rookie won a Super Bowl ring with the Packers in 2010, made his announcement during the same week the team was finalizing its 53-man roster for the upcoming season.
According to Sports Illustrated, among the biggest surprises was the team moving to trim kicker Ramiz Ahmed, all but assuring that veteran kicker Mason Crosby will be returning for another season after undergoing surgery on his right knee.
While the team is hoping to find a spot for Ahmed on the practice squad, other cuts included linebackers La’Darius Hamilton and Kobe Jones, quarterback Danny Etling, wide receiver Juwann Winfree, cornerback Rico Gafford, running back Tyler Goodson, safety Shawn Davis and defensive linemen Chris Slayton.
