Rep. Gallagher announced today that Army veteran John Gillespie has been named the 2023 Northeast Wisconsin Veteran of the Year. Gillespie, a longtime Wisconsin resident, was recognized for his distinguished military career and his numerous contributions to the Northeast Wisconsin community. The announcement was made during a ceremony at American Legion Post 38, where Gallagher presented Gillespie with a certificate and a congratulatory entry in the Congressional Record.

"John has led a life of selfless service and sacrifice that has had an immeasurable impact on Northeast Wisconsin," said Rep. Gallagher. "He truly embodies what it means to be the Northeast Wisconsin Veteran of the Year, and I couldn't be prouder to recognize him with this award for his service, dedication, and excellence."

Gillespie's dedication to serving others is evident through his various accomplishments. He is the founder of the Rawhide Boys Ranch, a facility that provides support and guidance to at-risk youth in Wisconsin. With the help of former Packers quarterback Bart Starr, Gillespie established the ranch, which now serves over 750 young individuals. Additionally, Gillespie has been involved in projects such as the establishment of Plamann Park and volunteering with American Legion Post 38 in Appleton.

Rep. Gallagher's decision to honor Gillespie as the 2023 Northeast Wisconsin Veteran of the Year is part of an annual tradition. This is the third year that nominations have been accepted for this award, which aims to recognize veterans in Northeast Wisconsin who continue to display exemplary service after returning home. This year, over 50 nominations were received, showcasing the exceptional veteran community in the region.

The selection committee evaluated candidates based on specific criteria. These included service to the nation and Northeast Wisconsin through public service or volunteering, demonstration of excellence by going above and beyond the call of duty in the military or retirement, and clear dedication to the country and community with a passion for improving life in Northeast Wisconsin.
