In a ceremony held today, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) presented medals posthumously to the family of Captain Raymond Perry Birdsall II for his service in Germany during the aftermath of World War II. Birdsall, a native of Neenah and a graduate of Algoma High School, played a crucial role in providing stability to a recovering region and defending against communist aggression in Western Europe.

Rep. Gallagher praised Birdsall's contributions, stating, "Ray's efforts contributed to the security and prosperity of our allies abroad while ensuring our adversaries would think twice about any plans to invade Western Europe or threaten American troops."

The medals presented to Birdsall's family include the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, the National Defense Service Medal, the Expert Badge with Carbine Bar, and the Marksman Badge with Pistol Bar.

Birdsall's military service began when he was inducted into the United States Army in December 1950. After completing artillery training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was deployed to Germany. During his time in Germany, Birdsall and his fellow servicemembers supported the mutual defense of NATO allies and served as a deterrent against communist aggression.

After nearly two years of service, Birdsall was honorably discharged from active duty in November 1952. However, his dedication to his country did not waver, as he continued to serve in the Army Reserves. Birdsall went on to marry Arlene Anderson and raise seven children.

Reflecting on Birdsall's character and achievements, Rep. Gallagher shared, "Captain Birdsall’s performance of duty as Battalion Adjutant was superior at all times. He is an energetic officer who exercises good judgment and common sense. He was a distinct asset to this unit and the reserve program."

In his closing remarks, Rep. Gallagher expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to honor Birdsall's service and thanked the family for their father's dedication to the country and its defense.

The presentation of these medals serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemembers like Captain Raymond Perry Birdsall II, who selflessly served their country and contributed to the security and prosperity of the United States and its allies.
