As fall arrives, many people experience an increase in allergy symptoms due to higher levels of airborne allergens such as ragweed pollen, mold spores, and dust mites. These allergens can cause symptoms that are often mistaken for colds or viral infections.

Dr. Ishaan Jakhar, an asthma and allergy physician at Emplify Health by Bellin, explained the differences between allergies and viral illnesses. “While fall allergies and colds share similar symptoms like sneezing and nasal congestion, allergies typically do not cause fever or body aches, which are common with viral infections. Allergies also tend to persist as long as the allergen is present, whereas colds usually resolve within a week to 10 days.”

Dr. Jakhar highlighted the importance of distinguishing between allergy symptoms and those caused by viruses for effective treatment. He said that understanding symptom patterns and triggers can help avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics or other medications.

Emplify Health by Bellin advises individuals who have ongoing respiratory symptoms during the fall season to consult healthcare providers for proper diagnosis and treatment plans. Managing fall allergies effectively can improve quality of life and reduce the risk of complications.

For more information about fall allergies or to schedule an appointment with a specialist, individuals are encouraged to visit Emplify Health by Bellin’s website or contact their provider.
