Volunteers, who have signed up to review the state’s ballots from the 2020 election for fraud, will focus on Brown County next.
Molly Beck, who covers politics and state government for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, tweeted that a member of the volunteers, Peter Bernegger, has a prior conviction on their record.
“(A) Wisconsin man who's scanning ballots and conducting election reviews was convicted of fraud,” she said.
Bernegger has been reviewing ballots in municipalities across the state, including Westport and Verona, according to Beck’s report.
In hopes of finding any evidence, the group is employing microscopes to examine whether the ballots were filled out by hand or by machine.
Bernegger told the newspaper that he is working with people from both parties, but has refused to disclose his own political affiliation.
"Our intention is to have true and honest elections. You hear all kinds of rumors and we want to dispel some of those if they're not true," Bernegger said.
Despite the volunteers' efforts to find any evidence of election tampering, their efforts are likely to be for not.
No widespread evidence of fraud has been found by prosecutors and a recount verified President Joe Biden defeated former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
