Steve Cortes, Senior Political Advisor for CatholicVote, described Susan Crawford's stance on abortion as "radical," asserting that she supports "the termination of an unborn baby right up until birth." Cortes provided his statement to the Green Bay Reporter on March 11.
"Susan Crawford is a radical on abortion, supporting the termination of an unborn baby right up until birth," said Cortes. "She worked for Planned Parenthood and represents the most extreme stances possible on abortion."
In an interview with Milwaukee’s WISN-TV, Crawford expressed pride in her legal work. She said, "I'm proud of the work that I did as a lawyer in our courts fighting for people's rights, including Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin and their doctors, to protect their right to deliver health care services to women without having to be in fear of felony prosecution for doing it."
According to Sconi, Wisconsin's 1849 abortion law, which prohibits abortions after "quickening" except to save the mother's life, is under court review following the election. Critics have questioned Crawford’s neutrality due to her past advocacy. Her opponent, Brad Schimel, has said he respects voters' decisions on abortion laws.
Planned Parenthood endorsed Susan Crawford in February. "Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin is proud to stand alongside a leader committed to reproductive freedom," said Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin President Tanya Atkinson in a press release.
In its endorsement press release, Planned Parenthood noted that Crawford "has committed to protecting access" to abortion and highlighted her role as a prosecutor and advocate for abortion rights. The organization also mentioned that Crawford was part of a group of attorneys challenging Wisconsin statutes restricting access to abortion.
