As the seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases across the nation declines, Wisconsin is seeing its statewide numbers fall, too.

The state Department of Health Services (DHS) reported 2,491 confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Jan. 30. That is the lowest number of new cases since Christmas Day, according to a Fox11 news report. The seven-day average of new cases fell to 5,926, its lowest level since Dec. 30, that report said.

While the number of new cases fell, so too has the positivity rate. The percentage of tests that have come back positive reached a high of 29.3% Jan. 10. It has since fallen below 20%, DHS numbers show.

The omicron variant is the latest version of the virus. It’s high level of contagiousness had resulted in surging numbers across the country over the past couple of months.

Wisconsin has reported more than 1.3 million COVID-19 cases and 12,453 deaths, confirmed and probable, since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Those numbers were through Jan. 31.

Hospitalizations increased slightly Jan. 31, with the Wisconsin Hospital Association telling Fox11 that 1,579 coronavirus patients were in hospitals. That was an increase of 15 over Jan. 30’s numbers but down 351 from a week earlier. Although the daily number fluctuates, the state has seen a downward trend in COVID-19 cases at hospitals.
