'I'm not sure how to answer that safely right now': Packers could franchise tag Adams

After the Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 during the 2022 Super Bowl, NFL teams now begin “placing the franchise or transition tag on players” whose contracts are expiring.

However, Davante Adams, Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver, is unsure of his feelings if the team franchise tags him.

“I’m not sure,” he said to the Atlantic. “I’m not sure how to answer that safely right now, so we’ll just cross that bridge when we get to it. I’ll just say that. I like to be professional on here.”

The NFL has three tender options. They are non-exclusive franchise tags, exclusive franchise tags and transition tags.

“Each team can use only one tag in a year,” Kevin Patra, a writer for the NFL, wrote. “The club owns the right to rescind the tender at any time, but it counts as being used. A player can be tagged up to three times by his team, with a jump in pay each occurrence, but the percentage of the salary cap taken up by the third time generally makes it prohibitive.”

Other players facing this are J.C. Jackson, New England Patriots’ corner; Orlando Brown, Kansas City Chiefs left tackle and Chandler Jones, Arizona Cardinals linebacker.

“While the window opens, don't expect a flurry of moves, as clubs generally wait until closer to the deadline to implement the tag to work out an extension before it comes to using a tender,” Patra said.

The tag window opened up on Feb. 22, allowing teams to place franchise or transition tags on players whose contracts are set to expire.

Though Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers still hasn't announced his plans for the upcoming season, Rodgers commented on the Pat McAfee Show.

“I don’t think [Adams] wants the franchise (tag),” Rodgers said. “No player ever wants the franchise.”

The Packers have a lot of big decisions to make in the upcoming weeks, and whether or not to tag Adams, No. 17, is one of them. However, most decisions about tagging aren't made until the deadline closes in on an end.
