The Oconto County School Supply Drive Inc. has become a vital initiative in its fifth year, dedicated to providing students with essential school supplies. This community-driven effort began in 2020 and has since distributed thousands of backpacks filled with necessary items to students in need.

Brittney Dequaine, the organizer of the drive, shared her motivation: “When I was young, my mom brought me to an event where I received free school supplies, and it left a lasting positive memory.” She added that this experience inspired her to bring the idea to life in Oconto County.

The drive's impact has grown significantly each year due to strong support from local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers. In its inaugural year, 120 backpacks were distributed; by 2023, this number increased to over 1,475. Organizers expect to break records again this year as they address the growing needs of students throughout the county.

Samantha Routheau, President of the Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce, praised the program's success: “The success of this program is a testament to the incredible people in our community. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors and ensuring every child has the tools they need to learn, grow, and succeed.”

The initiative relies on various fundraisers and events such as Easter torte sales, the annual Stuff the Bus campaign in June, and events at Thompson’s Brat Barn. At HarvestFest on Main Street, families participated in games and bucket raffles while supporting local students.

Dequaine emphasized the community's role: “Our community members, sponsors, and volunteers are the backbone of this program. Each donation, fundraiser, and backpack filled represents a collective commitment to our children’s future.”

As it enters its fifth year, the drive continues expanding its reach across Oconto County. Iconic yellow school bus donation boxes will return this summer for easy contributions from residents. Donations can also be made at American Family Insurance Kevin Hugget Agency Inc., located at 215 Main Street in Oconto.
