Other forms of impairment include drowsy driving, drug-impaired driving, and distracted driving, said Dr. Angie Qualio, Emplify Health by Bellin Emergency Department Medical Director.

“We all know that we need to focus when we’re driving. Driving requires a lot of focus, attention, quick reflexes and coordination,” Qualio said. “So, things like alcohol, drugs, some medications and being distracted — like messing with your phone or GPS — can hinder our ability to drive appropriately. Even distractions caused by kids in the back seat can be dangerous.”

Dr. Qualio says knowing if you’re impaired depends on what kind of impaired driving you’re talking about. With consumable products like drugs and alcohol, people must take personal responsibility and understand these substances can impair judgment. For medications that can make you drowsy, arranging a safe ride is key. Identifying your emotions is also important. Major stress or moments of grief impact how we operate a vehicle.

“You really need to plan ahead, whether that’s designating a sober driver or just figuring out a safe ride,” said Emplify Health by Bellin Emergency Physician Dr. Brad Burmeister. “Distracted or impaired driving can easily turn into a life-threatening situation.”

Driving while drowsy is also another form of impaired driving.

“If you’re lacking sleep, you shouldn’t be driving,” Burmeister said. “If you feel yourself nodding off, blinking heavily or drifting into another lane or traffic, it’s a good idea to pull off the road for a rest. Doing so could literally save your life.”
