The Green Bay Packers have introduced a new uniform inspired by the team's history, called the 1923 Classic. The uniform will be worn during a game at Lambeau Field this fall, with the specific date to be announced soon.
The 1923 Classic Uniform features navy blue jerseys with dark gold numbers and stripes, tan pants, and navy socks. The design is based on what the team wore in 1923, which was its first season as a publicly owned corporation. A notable feature of the ensemble is a hand-painted helmet that mimics the appearance of vintage leather helmets used in early NFL history. These brown helmets include detailed distressing and painted leather strap effects, along with a navy face mask.
Fans can purchase items from the new collection at the Packers Pro Shop or online at packersproshop.com. The collection includes jerseys, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, caps, knit hats, and various novelty items such as pennants and mugs. Riddell SpeedFlex Authentic helmets and Speed Mini helmets are available for pre-order online, while a limited number of full-size helmets will be sold in-store for the launch. The retail version of these helmets will also have a hand-decorated look.
By late 1922, Green Bay's football franchise faced financial trouble due to poor weather impacting attendance and causing game cancellations. In December of that year, local supporters met at the Elks Club to plan a stock sale in 1923. This led to the creation of the publicly owned Green Bay Football Corporation—a structure that still exists today—which allowed for funding matching navy blue jerseys for players.
A description from September 1923 in the Green Bay Press-Gazette stated: "The Bay eleven resplendent in their new jerseys, dark blue with gold striped arms, made an imposing appearance."
Previous classic uniforms included the 50s Classic (worn from 2021-24), which celebrated uniforms from 1950-53; historic uniforms honoring the 1929 season (worn in 2010-11 and 2013-14); and a recreation of uniforms from the 1940s (worn from 2015-19).
"The 1923 Classic campaign is presented by American Family Insurance."
