Foth and the Village of Salem Lakes have received the Small Project of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Section of the American Water Works Association (WIAWWA) for their recent improvements to the local water system. The award recognizes projects that demonstrate creative engineering, positive community impact, and effective solutions for public water systems.

The project addressed several issues with Salem Lakes’ existing water infrastructure. Previously, the village relied on a single well and a 250,000-gallon water tower, which posed risks due to lack of backup supply, elevated radium levels in the well, and seasonal fluctuations in water quality. The need for system growth also required a solution that could be expanded cost-effectively.

To improve reliability and safety, Foth installed a second well near the original site. This allowed for better use of existing infrastructure while keeping costs down. A custom blending system was designed to mix water from both wells, reducing radium concentrations without building a new treatment facility. According to Foth, this approach saved the village an estimated $1.5 to $2 million.

In addition, an automated flushing system was introduced to address seasonal temperature changes affecting water quality. The system uses remote monitoring technology to maintain consistent quality and protect infrastructure without manual intervention.

These upgrades have improved service reliability for businesses, farmers, emergency services, and other users in Salem Lakes. Enhanced fire protection capabilities have increased public safety, while measures taken to reduce radium support public health and environmental sustainability. The improvements also prepare the village for future expansion and regulatory requirements.

Foth collaborated closely with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources throughout the project to secure necessary permits and approvals. "Through effective communication, regulatory coordination, and a collaborative approach, the team successfully addressed site constraints and navigated complex permitting processes to deliver a fully compliant and operational solution," according to Foth.
