Professional translators are increasingly needed in Northeast Wisconsin as the region's Spanish-speaking population grows. In response, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UW-Green Bay) has introduced a new English-to-Spanish Noncredit Certificate program that includes an American Translators Association (ATA) exam preparation boot camp.

The program aims to provide bilingual professionals with training necessary for accurate and culturally competent translation in fields such as healthcare, education, and the legal system. Karin Kirchmeier, CEO of Partners for Community Development, Inc., said, “As an organization that has historically provided translation services, this newly developed noncredit certificate meets the need of the growing Hispanic population in the areas where a translator can meet a critical need.” She added, “Providing this option for bilingual professionals creates additional access, inclusivity and understanding in our communities and will positively impact the regional workforce.”

The certificate consists of three hybrid courses delivered over two or three semesters and features an ATA Exam Prep Boot Camp. Prospective participants must complete a language proficiency assessment prior to enrollment; however, those interested only in ATA certification may take just the boot camp.

There is rising demand for trained translators across sectors such as schools, hospitals, courtrooms, law enforcement agencies, and nonprofit organizations serving immigrant or refugee communities. Most professional translators work independently on a freelance basis.

Enrollment is now open for classes beginning in Fall 2025. More information about the program is available on UW-Green Bay’s English-to-Spanish Translation Noncredit Certificate website or by contacting Kerry Winkler at winklerk@uwgb.edu or 920-465-2508.

UW-Green Bay serves more than 11,000 students annually and offers over 200 academic programs across four campuses in Northeast Wisconsin. The university also provides continuing education opportunities to nearly 86,000 learners each year. Additional details can be found at www.uwgb.edu.
