Former Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy has been named the inaugural Executive in Residence for University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Athletics. The university announced that Murphy will have an office at the Kress Events Center Athletics offices on campus, with his appointment effective immediately.
“We are honored to have Mark Murphy join UW-Green Bay as an Executive in Residence,” said Chancellor Mike Alexander. “His passion for this region, belief in the importance of education, his experience as a D1 Athletic Director, and his incredible qualities as a leader will continue to inspire us.”
Murphy expressed appreciation for the opportunity. “I’m honored to be named UWGB’s Executive in Residence,” he said. “I have tremendous respect for both Chancellor Alexander and Josh [Moon], and look forward to helping them keep UWGB’s athletics program competitive in the rapidly changing Division I landscape. I’m also excited to go back to my roots in college athletics at a school that means so much to the local community.”
In this new role, Murphy will work on raising the profile of Phoenix Athletics’ Division I programs and building partnerships across the region with individuals and businesses. He is expected to assist with strategic projects such as capital improvements, sports sponsorships, and developing long-term plans for sustainable excellence within Phoenix athletics. Additionally, Murphy will mentor coaches and staff while supporting special initiatives from the Chancellor, including Phoenix Innovation Park.
Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics Josh Moon welcomed Murphy’s involvement: “We are thrilled to have an amazing leader like Mark join us for this next chapter in his career,” Moon said. “His legacy with the Packers speaks for itself and he will help us in so many ways as we continue our RISE. Having Mark in our corner as we navigate these challenging times in D1 athletics means so much to me and all of us in Phoenix athletics.”
The relationship between Murphy and UW-Green Bay was further strengthened when Moon was named the first Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics at UW-Green Bay following a lead gift from the Green Bay Packers establishing and endowing the position.
Before leading the Packers beginning in 2007, Murphy served as Director of Athletics at Colgate University (1992-2003) and Northwestern University (2003-07). His professional football career included eight years playing safety for Washington (1977-84), where he was co-captain from 1980-84—including during their Super Bowl win in 1982—and earned All-Pro honors after leading the NFL with nine interceptions in 1983. He is recognized as being unique among NFL figures by earning Super Bowl rings both as a player (Super Bowl XVII) and chief executive (Super Bowl XLV).
During his tenure with Green Bay, Murphy has supported UW-Green Bay through service on its Council of Trustees along with participation in fundraising efforts benefiting the university.
UW-Green Bay serves more than 11,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students annually across four campuses located throughout Northeast Wisconsin. The university offers over 200 academic degrees, programs, and certificates while maintaining an access mission welcoming students globally. More information can be found at www.uwgb.edu.
