CITY OF SHAWANO: Utility Disconnection Scam Alert

Phone scam

City of Shawano issued the following announcement on Aug. 12

SMU  was visited by a customer that was scammed out of $1,500 by a caller claiming to represent WE Energies and then SMU threatening to disconnect her gas and electric service in 24 hours if their bill was not paid. Our customer was actually up to date with SMU but the caller claimed to need a $900 payment using a special cash card she had to buy. The caller called and threatened 4 times extracting 3 $500 payments and then demanded an additional payment the 4th time, finally putting this person over the edge to the point she came to our office pleading not to be disconnected.

Please be aware of this scam and that members of our community are being targeted. We encourage family members and neighbors to pass this message on to our elderly customers who may feel they are at risk for disconnection

SMU WILL NOT call demanding payments by special cash cards or Bitcoin. If any of our customers receive calls like this, DO NOT give the caller any payment. SMU will not call threatening immediate disconnection or demanding payment. Please call SMU at 715-526-3131 if you have any concerns about your electric service being disconnected.
