A brand new mural in Green Bay celebrates the LBGTQ+ community.
Local artist Loschue "Chue" Lo, a queer Hmong American, won a competition to paint a mural on the side of Napalese Bar and Grille, the second oldest gay bar in Green Bay, with its reveal kicking off Pride Weekend.
The mural uses the “Progress Pride flag” and focuses on reminding people of their importance in the LGBTQ+ community.
Lo told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that the art project would tap into his artistic ability and celebrate the pride community of Wisconsin.
"Then it developed more into doing this for the community, for the Black and brown people in this neighborhood," Lo said, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "It became very personal, as well, to my identity as a queer person of color. This is no longer just about me doing artwork. This is about the community, about me giving back to the City of Green Bay."
The Weekend of Pride event included live music, food trucks and drag queen performances near Cedar Street, with Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich posting his excitement on Twitter before the event.
"The Weekend of Pride is nearly here. See you on Cedar Street," Genrich said on Aug. 11.
“Equal existence has always been near and dear to my heart,” Valerie Steinken, an event attendee said, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “For lack of a better word it makes me proud (to be here today) and I’m so happy that this is happening in Green Bay.”
