State Rep. John Macco (R-Green Bay) was there when two local high school seniors were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.

“Attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Eli Hermans and Mark Olsen," the representative wrote on Twitter. "Both are seniors at De Pere HS and have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills through their projects that helped our community. Young people, like Eli and Mark, assure me our future is in good hands.”

Eagle Scout is the Scouts BSA's highest rank and one that many never achieve.

"In 2019, 8% of all Scouts BSA earned the Eagle Scout rank," the organization said.

It requires 21 merit badges to reach the rank of Eagle. Candidates must also "plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school or their community."

Eagle Scouts must first earn the ranks of scout, Tenderfoot, second class, first class, star and life before reaching Eagle. In 2019, the average age of members receiving their Eagle rank was 17 1/2, the scouts said.

Famous Eagle Scouts were Neil Armstrong, Bill Gates and Steven Spielberg, the organization said. Only one president, Gerald Ford, was an Eagle, the website VeryWell Family reported. He said receiving the award was "one of the proudest moments of my life."
