If you’re tired of seeing mounds of plastic bags sitting around the house, here’s a chance to recycle them and protect wildlife.

Green Bay is pushing residents to drop off various types of plastic — ice bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper wraps and shopping bags.

“Do you have a bunch of plastic bags saved up from all of that holiday shopping?” the city asked in a tweet this week. “Drop them off at the Wildlife Sanctuary or at City Hall in our NexTrex Recycling boxes! We need your help to collect 500 pounds of recyclable plastic through June 1.”

City Hall is at 100 N. Jefferson St., and the Wildlife Sanctuary is at 1600 E. Shore Dr.

“Our goal is to reduce the amount of plastic bags and film being put into landfills and we need your help to collect 500 pounds of plastic, or approximately 40,500 plastic bags, within a six month timeframe,” the city posted on Facebook.

By achieving that goal, the city will receive a bench from the Trex Co. that would be made from recycled plastic.

Plastic trash, in many forms, can cause problems for wildlife that gets tangled in the products.

Wisconsin has many environmentally conscious residents, with the Department of Natural Resources estimating that 94% of households recycle.
