Gov. Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul recently spoke in support of reproductive rights, marking the 49th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

"Reproductive health care decisions are deeply personal and should be made by patients and their health care providers. And politicians and special interests shouldn't interfere in those decisions—not in Wisconsin or anywhere else. Period," Evers said.

If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, a 172-year-old abortion law could go into effect in Wisconsin.

"Abortion restrictions already harm black, Latino and Indigenous people the most. And these communities stand to lose the most if Roe is overturned," Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin CEO Tanya Atkinson said.

Bill 713 bill specifies that every individual has the fundamental right to choose to obtain a safe and legal abortion. The bill eliminates requirements for voluntary and informed consent before the performance of an abortion. The bill eliminates the prohibition on coverage of abortions by qualified health plans offered through an exchange in this state.

In December 2021, Evers vetoed five bills that would have made abortion access more restrictive for women.

"I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again today: As long as I’m governor, I will veto any legislation that turns back the clock on reproductive rights in this state—and that’s a promise,” Evers said. “We cannot go backwards, and I will never stop working to make sure every Wisconsinite has access to quality, affordable health care, including reproductive health care in this state."
