The organizations located behind Green Bay's Broadway District have announced a multi-million dollar redevelopment project.

The organization is a community-based organization that is charged with maintaining and promoting the district. This project is part of that responsibility and initiative.

On Broadway, Inc. announced the project, which is a two-part, $30 million redevelopment undertaking. The announcement took place at Old Fort Square.

The first phase will see that the building is transformed into a public market that is focused on food, but will cater to vendors of all kinds. This phase will cost between $10 and $12 million to complete.

The second phase of the project will develop the Broadway Market Apartments, which is a 90-unit complex located behind Old Fort Square. It will feature a parking lot and cost a total of $21 million.

"Green Bay is all about creating interesting spaces and places, and a public market is absolutely something that'll be attractive," Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich said.

The goal of the two-phase project will be to attract more than a million visitors on a yearly basis to downtown Green Bay.

"When people come to the Broadway District, we are extending the amount of time that they spend here and of course the amount of money that they spend here as well," Johnson said. "It's our hope and anticipation that this will become one of the top destinations here in the City of Green Bay," Brian Johnson, executive director of On Broadway, said.

To get inspiration for the new public market, Johnson and a team visited other public markets around the world to get ideas and shape the public market in Green Bay.

According to On Broadway, it's the goal to break ground on the project in fall of 2022 and complete the project by summer of 2023.
