Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers have reached terms on a new deal that could change the face of the entire NFL.
While terms of the new deal remain sketchy, reports are the two sides are working through final language that will lower Rodgers’ salary-cap figure for the upcoming season while assuring the 38-year-old quarterback a place on the team payroll well into his 40s.
ESPN reports Green Bay is now more than $27 million over the cap with just days before the official start of the new league year. The team was always expected to offer Rodgers a new deal that addressed its salary cap concerns while also providing market-level compensation for the two-time reigning league MVP.
As negotiations played out, the Denver Broncos were chief among other teams known to be lurking and interested in Rodgers' services.
Rodgers came into the offseason with a year remaining on a deal that would count $46.1 million against the team salary cap.
According to CBS, the new deal could make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the league based on annual salary, eclipsing the $45 million per season, 10-year $450 million extension Patrick Mahomes signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in July.
