Mike Gallagher for Wisconsin issued the following announcement on May 23.
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement after President Biden declared the U.S. military would defend Taiwan if the Chinese Communist Party launched an invasion of the country.
“President Biden has once again made clear that when push comes to shove, the United States will defend Taiwan. This strategic clarity is necessary but not sufficient. The President must follow it up with the decisive action that will be required to deter a Chinese Communist Party invasion of Taiwan within the next five years.
“Across the United States government and the free world, leaders must have a sense of urgency to expand Taiwan's military capabilities, enhance military posture and logistics footprint in the region, stockpile key munitions, bring Taiwan into the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, and deter a fait accompli against Taiwan before it occurs."
In an FDD memo earlier this year, Rep. Gallagher outlined the steps the U.S. needs to take to deter, and if necessary defeat, a CCP invasion of Taiwan.
He's also introduced legislation that ensures the U.S. maintains the ability to defeat any attempted CCP invasion of Taiwan, and called for the U.S. to formally end strategic ambiguity and stand with Taiwan.
