Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) responded to President Biden's State of the Union address with a critical statement highlighting the concerns of many Americans. Gallagher pointed out that despite Biden's assertion that the state of the union is strong and improving, a majority of Americans feel differently. He stated, "President Biden said that the state of the union is strong and getting stronger, yet seventy percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction."

Gallagher criticized the President's speech as divisive and criticized the administration's handling of various crises. He noted, "He started by attacking his predecessor and current election opponent, which was weird. He claimed he does not have the resources to secure the southern border, yet is actively using US resources to construct a port in Gaza, gifting Hamas and Iran a new access point to further abuse humanitarian assistance and deliver and distribute weapons."

In addition, Gallagher expressed concerns about President Biden's age and suitability for the presidency, stating, "And it gives me no joy to say this, but his performance yet again revealed that he (a member of the Silent Generation) is much too old to be president."

Furthermore, Gallagher reflected on the format of the State of the Union address, calling for a change in the approach. He remarked, "Finally, this was my eighth and final State of the Union. These speeches are far too long, with too many standing ovations, and too many disparate ideas unconnected by a coherent, interesting argument. It is time to return to a written State of the Union or a speech that is less than 20 minutes."
