Green Bay, Wis. - In a recent announcement, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Philanthropy class revealed that a $10,000 grant will be awarded to the nonprofit organization COMSA. This donation aims to support an after-school program for refugee youth in the community, addressing various challenges they face.
The grant, funded jointly by the Learning By Giving Foundation and an anonymous Brown County donor, will enable COMSA to expand its services for refugee youth. Abby Schulte, a student at UW-Green Bay, expressed her excitement about the impact of the grant, stating, "This grant will be bringing awareness to the struggles of refugee youth, as well as social isolation and substance abuse within the group."
The Philanthropy class at UW-Green Bay has a long-standing tradition of giving back to the community, with over $110,000 donated to Green Bay area organizations since 2012. Professor Lora Warner, who leads the course, emphasized the importance of empowering students to make a difference beyond financial contributions. She stated, "Students learn that there are many ways to have an impact as well as giving money."
The event announcing the grant recipient will be broadcast live on Facebook, where students will discuss their project and the impact of their experience in the class. Additionally, the Celebrating Students Award program by the Public & Environmental Affairs Department will recognize outstanding alumni and community partners for their contributions to the university.
As the UW-Green Bay Philanthropy class continues its mission of civic engagement through giving, the $10,000 grant to COMSA signifies a significant step towards supporting immigrant youth in the community. For more information on COMSA, visit their website at https://www.comsausa.org/.
