Addiction rates in Wisconsin have increased sharply, with alcohol-induced deaths rising by 142% over the past twenty years and synthetic opioid fatalities, mainly due to fentanyl, growing twentyfold since 2010. These trends have prompted new educational efforts aimed at addressing the public health crisis.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has partnered with Mental Health America Lakeshore (MHA-Lakeshore) to introduce the Addiction Recovery Certificate Program. This initiative is intended for professionals working with individuals in recovery as well as friends and family members supporting loved ones. The program is available online and on-demand, with a professional track consisting of 10 hours of learning and an ally version that can be completed in four hours.

Julie Preder, executive director at MHA-Lakeshore, said, “The Addiction Recovery Certificate Program is important because it builds critical knowledge and skills at a time when communities face increasing challenges with addiction and mental health. By offering accessible, high-quality training, the program helps strengthen the workforce, supports individuals on their recovery journey and ensures more people have the compassionate, informed care they deserve.“

The curriculum covers topics such as the science of addiction, trauma-informed care, co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention strategies, digital addiction impacts, social isolation effects, cultural considerations in recovery support, mindfulness techniques, and case studies from experienced counselors.

This certificate program aligns with UW-Green Bay’s broader commitment to community health initiatives and workforce development. The university emphasizes a holistic approach that includes attention to trauma and social factors influencing addiction.

Enrollment fees are set at $49 for the professional track and $25 for the ally version. Registration details are available through UW-Green Bay’s website or by contacting Melissa Betke at (920) 663-7337.

Mental Health America Lakeshore has provided mental health education and support since 1953 as an affiliate of Mental Health America. UW-Green Bay serves more than 11,000 students across four campuses in Northeast Wisconsin and offers a range of academic programs focused on community engagement.
