Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Dec. 20
A small family-run ski hill in the Northwoods is gearing up for its second season in business.
Paul Bunyan Ski Hill in Lakewood planned to open Saturday, but recent warm weather pushed that date to Christmas Day.
With temperatures in the teens Friday morning, snow making machines are running non-stop at Paul Bunyan Ski Hill, working to make up for lost time. Officials say preparations at the site started about three weeks ago.
"We got a really decent base, and then Mother Nature helped us out with a great bunch of snow last week or so, then unfortunately she rained on us, and took some away. But we're making snow back to continue on," said TJ Kerscher, Paul Bunyan Ski Hill co-owner.
Kerscher says there will be six ski and snowboard runs, another tow rope was added, and lights were installed in the offseason as well.
"Night skiing is a lot of fun. It's actually my favorite kind of skiing, is night skiing. The conditions are a little faster, and the snow is a little crisper. I enjoy night skiing," he said.
Also new this year is a tubing run, set to open in the near future.
"We purchased some tube-pro tubes, the lift and the run is going to be about 800-feet long with a decent slope on it. And there's going to be multiple lanes. A multi-lift handle tow will bring the tubes up to the top of the hill, so you don't have to walk up the hill," said Kerscher.
TJ's wife, and co-owner says she's excited about the second season.
"We call it the biggest little hill in Wisconsin, and we're going to stick by that motto. We're going to make it better every year for these kids, and surrounding areas, to come and enjoy," said Wendy Kerscher, Paul Bunyan Ski Hill xo-owner.
The Kerschers say they plan to keep the ski hill open four days a week, including weekends and holidays. They say depending on the weather conditions, the season could extend into March.
