Green Bay crossing guard Tony Helminger is standing out in his community for going above and beyond.
The Green Bay Police Department reports that Helminger was recently approached by three young siblings on their way home from school while he was stationed near Wilder Elementary School at Edgewood Drive and Robinson Avenue. The two boys and their sister had forgotten their way home and were frantic to get back to their mom.
“Their mom had dropped them off in the morning and felt comfortable to let them walk home once school was out,” Helminger told WeAreGreenBay. “She had talked to them about it on numerous occasions. Then when it came time to do so, the kids couldn’t remember their address or which direction to go.”
That’s when the Cross Safe employee sprang into action, calling law enforcement to get involved and staying with the kids until police arrived.
“I could sense that they were a bit scared,” Helminger said.
Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych praised Helminger for doing exactly what he feels he should have.
“Crossing guards have a positive impact on kids daily,” he said. “This is just one example of how meaningful they are to this community. Please be sure to show signs of appreciation when you see a crossing guard.”
Helminger said he could tell that the kids were terrified when they approached him and was grateful to officers for quickly reuniting the family.
