In a recent statement, Member of Congress Rep. Mike Gallagher expressed his concerns about the ongoing government shutdown and emphasized the need for a conservative approach to address the crisis. He highlighted the missed opportunity to pass a conservative bill that would have cut spending, secured the border, and tackled the debt crisis through a long-term fiscal commission.

Gallagher lamented the failure of the Republican Caucus to pass the bill and the lack of support from Democrats. He explained that despite the conservative outcome, the only remaining options are to support either the House Continuing Resolution or the Schumer Continuing Resolution, with the latter being less favorable for conservatives. He dismissed the idea of shutting down the government for a few days, as he believed the Democrats would ultimately reopen it on their terms.

To move forward, Gallagher stressed the importance of utilizing the forty-five-day process to pass appropriations bills with conservative priorities and spending limits. He acknowledged the lack of leverage with the Democrat-controlled Senate and emphasized the need to fix the broken budget and appropriations process. Gallagher proposed combining the authorizing and appropriations committees, addressing the illogical budget timeline, and supporting Ron Johnson's reform to prevent future shutdown issues.
