The Green Bay Packers have reached an agreement to trade defensive lineman Preston Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The transaction, which is pending a physical, was announced by Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst on Tuesday. In exchange for Smith, the Packers will receive a seventh-round draft pick in 2025.
Smith has been with the Packers since 2019 and has played in 91 regular-season games, starting 88 of them. During his tenure, he achieved a team-high of 44 sacks, placing him sixth on Green Bay's all-time list since 1982. This season, Smith started all nine games and recorded 19 tackles, including six solo tackles, and made 2.5 sacks. He also registered four quarterback hits and tied for fourth on the team with 11 NextGenStat QB pressures.
Notably, Smith is one of only two NFL players alongside T.J. Watt to have achieved over 65 sacks (66), five interceptions (five), and nine forced fumbles from 2015 to 2023. Additionally, he participated in seven postseason games for the Packers, recording a total of 25 tackles and contributing significantly with sacks and quarterback hits.
