David Esswein, head coach of Kiel High School's football team, has been honored as the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week. In his fifth year leading the Raiders, Esswein has guided his team to an 11-0 record as they advance to Level 3 of the WIAA State Football Playoffs.
Esswein attributes their success to a culture focused on effort and hard work. "We really stress all the details and coach the details every single day," he said. "We hold the kids accountable to always do their best."
The program also emphasizes community involvement, particularly with youth in Kiel. "Our players are involved with youth practice and volunteering within the youth program," Esswein explained.
A native of Kiel and a graduate of Kiel High School in 2012, Esswein played for both his high school team and Upper Iowa University before returning to coach at his alma mater in 2020. Reflecting on his unexpected coaching career, he shared, "I never expected to be a coach... But it is truly my passion."
Winning this award is significant for Esswein but he acknowledges it as a collective achievement. "It's special to receive this because of all the people in Kiel and around our football program that work tirelessly," he noted.
Esswein leads a squad of 49 players with support from assistants Robb Landwehr, Shawn Hills, Cade Friday, Jay Binversie, Jamie Vandermeuse, Jon Braun, and Nick Reschke. Outside coaching duties include running Elevate Fitness in Pulaski.
The Green Bay Packers will recognize one high school coach each week during the season through this program. Winners receive several rewards including a $1,000 donation for their school's football program from both the Packers and NFL Foundation.
Nominations are accepted until Monday mornings at 10 a.m., directed to Jake Krueger at coachoftheweek@packers.com.
