The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Veteran Services Department is set to host a series of events from November 9 to 14, 2024, aimed at honoring active duty members, reservists, veterans, and their families. The events are open to the public and the community is encouraged to participate.
The schedule kicks off on Saturday, November 9, with the UW-Green Bay Women’s Basketball Military Appreciation Game against the University of Northern Iowa at the Kress Event Center. Military personnel can receive one free ticket by presenting identification.
On Monday, November 11, a solemn ceremony will take place at Leona Cloud Commons in the University Union. Cadets Elizabeth Eckes and Joshua Mikula will lead a POW/MIA Table ceremony to honor prisoners of war and those missing in action. "Nothing is more poignant than witnessing the empty chair sitting at a POW/MIA table with incredible significance for every displayed feature of this ritual," states an announcement from the university.
The week continues with the 19th Annual Chancellor’s Reception on Wednesday, November 13, held at The Weidner Foyer on campus. Emceed by John Maino, the event begins at 4 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. It aims to recognize new military students, graduating military students, donors, and recipients of veteran scholarships.
Concluding the week on Thursday, November 14, is a Veterans Pizza Lunch in the Veterans Lounge at Mary Ann Cofrin Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Attendees can enjoy free pizza while accessing resources available for service members including support from County Veterans Officers and community employers.
Nicole Stockman, Veterans Services Coordinator at UW-Green Bay stated that approximately 1,300 veterans and dependents receive education benefits each year through UW-Green Bay's Veteran’s Services program. Of these beneficiaries, 377 are military veterans or current service members while others are spouses or children of veterans.
