The City of Green Bay, in collaboration with the Green Bay Area Public Schools (GBAPS), has completed the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) at 48 locations across the city. These installations, funded by the city's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and a November 2022 referendum from GBAPS, aim to enhance pedestrian safety. According to research, RRFBs can reduce crashes by up to 47% and increase motorist yielding rates by up to 98%.
Mayor Eric Genrich commented on the project, stating, "The people of Green Bay want and deserve safe streets. These enhanced crosswalks improve pedestrian safety and driver awareness, and I’m grateful to City staff, our Common Council, and GBAPS leadership for making this plan a reality."
The initiative is part of the Safe Walk & Bike Plan, a joint effort between GBAPS and the city. The plan's goal is to encourage walking and biking among residents of all ages and abilities. RRFB locations were chosen based on their proximity to schools, crash data, roadway information, and community feedback.
Vicki Bayer, Superintendent of GBAPS, expressed pride in the partnership with the city: "The Green Bay Area Public School District is proud to have partnered with the City of Green Bay to make our community safer for all pedestrians, but especially for our students who walk to and from school each day." She added that investing in pedestrian safety also promotes healthy activities like walking.
The second phase will include more enhanced crosswalks and speed feedback signs around school zones.
