The Green Bay Public Works Department has announced that Main Street will be temporarily closed between North Monroe Avenue and N. Jackson Street for sewer utility work led by NEW Water, the brand of the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District.

The closure is scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 7:00 a.m. and is expected to last until Friday, August 22, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. A detour will be in place using N. Monroe Avenue, University Avenue, and N. Webster Avenue.

Access to residences and businesses within the affected area will remain available during the closure. The department noted that all closures, detours, and work operations are dependent on weather conditions and may change as needed. Drivers are advised to expect delays in the area, use caution while traveling through the work zone, and consider alternate routes.

The project is part of the Downtown Interceptors Renewal Project managed by NEW Water. According to information from NEW Water’s website (www.newwater.us/downtown), this effort aims to update sections of underground interceptor pipes in downtown Green Bay that have been in operation since the 1930s. These improvements are intended to revitalize aging infrastructure critical for protecting public health and the environment.

"The project is led by NEW Water, the brand of the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District. NEW Water owns and operates many miles of underground pipes, including a series of larger, deeper pipes called an interceptor system, located throughout Northeast Wisconsin. In downtown Green Bay, portions of this system have been in operation since the 1930s and are in need of improvements to revitalize critical, aging infrastructure to protect public health and the environment."

"This Downtown Interceptors Renewal Project is occurring to ensure that our community can continue to flush the toilet, wash their hands, and run their businesses whenever they want."

Further details about the project can be found at www.newwater.us/downtown.
