On Sept. 12, the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh celebrated its sesquicentennial.

The school held its first class ever in 1871, then known as Oshkosh Normal School for teachers, according to We Are Green Bay.

"Happy 150th @UWOshkosh! One-hundred fifty years ago today the university held its first classes. Here's to 150 more," Wisconsin State Sen. Tammy Baldwin wrote in a Sept. 12 Twitter post.

The university welcomed over 3,000 guests over the weekend to celebrate the occasion, with food, alumni and other fun events. Several local, regional and state leaders were present at the event to share stories of the campus.

“We had a great opportunity to celebrate 150 years, over seven generations of UWO here on this land,” Oshkosh Mayor Lori Palmeri and UWO Alumni said at the historic event, according to We Are Green Bay.

“In the late 1800s, City of Oshkosh leaders and residents fought for the ability to invest in the establishment of a teacher’s college in their city,” Chancellor Andrew Leavitt said. “They were futuristic. They knew it would be a beacon, transforming their local schools and the community and improving the quality of life here.”

The school currently has over 15,500 students enrolled in the campus.
