The woman known as “America’s most powerful flight attendant” will open a lecture series the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is to host in honor of Emeritus Professor Harvey J. Kaye.
Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, is the first speaker of the Harvey J. Kaye State of Democracy Speaker Series.
Nelson is slated to speak on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in Ft. Howard Hall of the Weidner Center, according to UWGB.
The four-part series seeks to engage with issues critical to democracy, such as workers’ rights, public health and journalism.
Nelson said that a belief in changing things lays the groundwork for success.
“From my view, the only thing that really matters is that you have to believe that you can change things,” she told TNR. “That is the most important ingredient to success. And then beyond that, to not just believe that you can change things, but understand that it actually takes a strategic plan.”
WisBusiness reported that Nelson, as union president, represents over 50,000 workers across 17 airlines.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she used her position to lobby for the retention of pay, health care and other benefits for airline workers.
