The state’s top education official touted an elementary school in Green Bay for its implementation of educational equity.
State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly said on social media that Danz Elementary School successfully tends to its students’ needs.
“Danz Elementary is a great example of how educational equity gets students what they need to learn – when they need it,” Underly tweeted on Oct 18. “They’re investing in mental health [and] SEL, addressing language barriers, leveraging community partnerships [and] more.”
The school has an equity department, which goes hand-in-hand with their family engagement efforts, a Green Bay Area Public School District webpage says.
“High-impact family engagement is important because it helps to promote, timely, culturally and linguistically communication approaches which will improve outcomes for students and families,” the GBAPS Equity Department wrote. “Our efforts need to be systematic and comprehensive.”
The department analogized family engagement to the preparation and baking of a cake.
“Think of family engagement as being baked INTO the cake, not just as icing that looks nice on top of the cake,” it says on the site. “It is best when family engagement is integrated throughout all aspects of programming.”
According to U.S. News & World Report, 90% of Danz’s total student population of 546 are minorities.
With a student-teacher ratio of 12:1, 15% of the students are at or above proficient math levels, and 14% are at or above proficient reading levels.
Danz works with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Green Bay to provide a holistic approach to learning and growing, the school says on its website.
