Of Notre Dame Academy's 755 students, 27% have their tuition paid by a taxpayer-funded voucher this year.
A large percentage of Wisconsin students are using publicly funded vouchers to attend private or religious schools, according to Fox 11 Online. In fact, private school vouchers are such a hot commodity that the website crashed on the first day.
“I thought, 'Wow, look at the demand,'” Director of External Programs for Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay Karen Konop said, according to Fox 11 Online. “I think there is a demand out there. I think parents are just anxious to find out what it was about.”
Konop said the use of the vouchers shows diversity and families of all economic standards that are in school, according to Fox 11 Online.
“Our school truly reflects the community now that we live in with the diversity and families of all economic standards that are in school,” Konop said, according to Fox 11 Online.
Although the Wisconsin House advanced the extension of the program and the Senate plans on the same, the governor plans on vetoing the bill, according to Fox 11 Online. The plan has the potential to come back if a Republican takes over the incumbent's spot this November. Republicans would get rid of enrollment and household income limits.
“Parents, you’re paying property taxes and state taxes and we’re going to let you decide what school works best for your child and we’re going to allow you to send your child there,” State Sen. Roger Roth (R-Appleton) said, according to Fox 11 Online.
