The City of Green Bay and the Green Bay Area Public Schools (GBAPS) have announced the completion of a project to enhance pedestrian safety. A total of 48 Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) with high visibility crosswalks have been installed throughout the city. This initiative was funded by the City's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation and funds from a November 2022 referendum by GBAPS.

Mayor Eric Genrich expressed satisfaction with the project, stating, "The people of Green Bay want and deserve safe streets. These enhanced crosswalks improve pedestrian safety and driver awareness, and I’m grateful to City staff, our Common Council, and GBAPS leadership for making this plan a reality."

This effort is part of the Safe Walk & Bike Plan, developed collaboratively by GBAPS and the City of Green Bay. The plan aims to promote walking and biking as regular activities for residents while ensuring safe travel to schools and other local destinations. The locations for RRFB installations were chosen based on their proximity to schools, crash data analysis, roadway details, and community input.

Green Bay Area Public School District Superintendent Vicki Bayer highlighted the importance of these improvements: "The Green Bay Area Public School District is proud to have partnered with the City of Green Bay to make our community safer for all pedestrians, but especially for our students who walk to and from school each day. Investing in pedestrian safety has the added benefit of encouraging children and adults to engage in healthy activities such as walking."

The next phase will include additional enhanced crosswalks and speed feedback signs around school zones.
