State Sen. Eric Wimberger (R-Green Bay) congratulated the city's Leonardo da Vinci School for Gifted Learners for its ranking as the top public elementary and middle school in Wisconsin.
“We’re incredibly proud of our local schools up here in the northeast side of the state and it comes with no surprise that we have one of the best in the country," the senator tweeted. "Great job Leonardo da Vinci School for Gifted Learners!”
U.S. News and World Report bestowed the top ranking on the K-8 da Vinci School, which is located on Monroe Avenue in downtown Green Bay, the Press-Times reported.
“We teach the state standards,” Principal Tammy VanDyke told the newspaper. “We have academically-advanced students. We need to keep them challenged. We also provide the necessary support to help our gifted learners deal with the challenges that may come with being academically-advanced (such as) disorganization, anxiety, perfectionism and procrastination.”
This is the first year that U.S. News and World Report has ranked elementary schools and middle schools, the Press-Times said. It also ranks high schools and colleges.
The publication ranked more than 80,000 elementary and middle schools nationally with California having the most on the list at 5,534 elementary schools and 2,319 highs schools, Patch reported.
The Leonardo da Vinci school has an enrollment of just under 400 students, of whom 75% are white and 15% Asian, according to the website School Digger.
